Tony Benn 1925-2014

I never read much about or by Tony Benn, but I was saddened to hear of his passing. This is one of my favourite Tony Benn quotes:
"If one meets a powerful person – Rupert Murdoch, perhaps, or Joe Stalin or Hitler – one can ask five questions: what power do you have; where did you get it; in whose interests do you exercise it; to whom are you accountable; and, how can we get rid of you? Anyone who cannot answer the last of those questions does not live in a democratic system.”

Some Pet Hates

You're one of those glass-half-empty people, whereas I'm more of a glass-half-full person.

Let's get this straight! Half a glass is exactly half a glass, the qualifiers 'full' and 'empty' are utterly redundant. If anyone uses the glass-half-empty or glass-half-full identifiers they are actually saying, "I lack the wit or originality to do anything but trot out threadbare cliches."

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Dinosaurs were laying eggs long before the evolution of chickendom - the egg preceded the chicken by millions of years.

The politics of envy.

The zebra does not envy the pack of hyenas feasting on the corpse of its brother.

Best Documentary

Anyone who has seen The Act of Killing must be absolutely stunned that the facile Twenty Feet from Stardom won Best Documentary at the Academy Awards. Arrogant, culturally supremacist corporate US once more demonstrates its utter contempt for humanity.
